02 Feb You Really Want Me To Eat Beans And Rice For A Month?
I hear the sentiment all the time, you really want me to eat beans and rice for a month? This is Dave Ramsey’s philosophy for getting out of debt. He says you have to be willing to do what you have to do to get out of debt and this may necessitate being frugal with the meals. I am a big fan of attempting to practice what I preach. So before I preach about being frugal with food I am setting out for the next thirty (30) days to eat rice and beans. I want to see first hand if it is possible and write about the journey. DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY TYPE OF DIET WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN.
Before I started recommending Angel Food Ministries I ate the items for two months. There were so many items each month I actually gave some away. The vegetables are awesome and there is always some staple item in the package. Aldi’s is another resource I use for discounted food. Their food is great and at a discounted price especially for milk, eggs and vegetables. Bottom line I recommend Angel Food Ministries and Aldi’s. In 26 more days I will let you know whether or not I recommend rice and beans as a way of budgeting.
The experiment will hopefully accomplish several things. It will give me personal knowledge so I can guide my clients when making life changes. It will give me something to actively control. It will give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the journey. It will give me (hopefully) a different perspective on food. And although I will never experience the hunger of those who go without food it will give me a slight insight as to what it is like to have no choice but to eat rice and beans just to survive. Again I am not making light of what many face in America and worldwide every day of their lives. But maybe through my journey I can educate others of the power that each of us possess to overcome adversity and survive.
Remember that knowledge is power and the more knowledge you have about food the more power you will have over your health and food budget.
Update as of December 19, 2011, I am sad to say that Angel Food Ministries are no longer in business.
