23 Oct Limits on Student Loan Garnishments

The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 amended certain provisions of the Higher Education Act to increase the amount that could be garnished from wages for defaulted student loans from 10 to 15 percent of disposable pay. Disposable pay is the amount of pay left over after the deduction of amounts–such as taxes–that are required by law to be withheld.
