07 Oct Bankruptcy Courts in Louisiana
A law school professor that I had during my first year of law school once explained that the purpose of law school is not to teach you where the courthouse is located, but to teach you how to find the courthouse if they decide to move it.
While this sounded clever, I’m not exactly sure what it meant.
Since I still think it is a useful thing to know the location of the courthouse, and to save you three years of law school and student loans, I am providing the following information about the bankruptcy courts in Louisiana.
The Bankruptcy Court System in Louisiana is divided into three districts: The Western District, with its main courthouse in Shreveport, the Middle District with its main courthouse in Baton Rouge, and the Eastern District, where I primarily practice, which is located in New Orleans.
Generally, your case is assigned to the district that is closet to where you live.
The Western District covers the largest portion of Louisiana and therefore has divisions in several locations. Be aware that two of the locations, Monroe and Lake Charles are not staffed, so any matters in those two locations need to be directed to the Shreveport Courthouse.
The following is the contact information for the Louisiana bankruptcy courts:
Western District of Louisiana
300 Fannin Street
Shreveport, Louisiana 71101
300 Jackson Street
Alexandria, Louisiana 71301
214 Jefferson Street
Lafayette, Louisiana 70501-7050
Monroe and Lake Charles – No staff. Call Shreveport bankruptcy court for information.
Middle District of Louisiana
707 Florida Street, Room 119
Baton Rouge, LA 70801
Fax: (225) 389-0211
Eastern District of Louisiana
Hale Boggs Federal Building
500 Poydras Street, Suite B-601
New Orleans, LA 70130
And, if they do move one of the courthouses, I’ll be sure to let you know.
