Bankruptcy FIlings Up 31.9% in 2009

According to statistics released by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, bankruptcy filings increased 31.9% in 2009, increasing from 1,117,641 in 2008 to 1,473,675 in 2009.

Business filings for 2009 were up 40%, from 43,533 in 2008 to 60,837.

Non-business filings were up 32%, from 1,074,108 in 2008 to 1,412,838.

Chapter 7 filings totaled 1,050,832, up 41% from 744,364 in 2008.

Chapter 11 filings increased 50%: 15,189, up from 10,147 in 2008.

Chapter 13 filings totaled 406,962, up 12% from 362,705 in 2008.
