Beware of Fake Debt Collectors

A perfect scam….someone purporting to be a debt collector calls demanding payment.  He has your bank account information, social security number, information about your relatives.  He demands payment by wire transfer within the hour .  Only the debt is fake and the caller is a scammer.  Could this happen.  Unfortunately, yes.  It is a problem being fueled by identity theft.  Read more here.

Even under intense pressure, it is important to retain common sense.  Never send or wire money to someone who calls without obtaining proof of who they are.  The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act provides that a legitimate debt collector must give a consumer a written notice within five days of initiating communication by phone.  One must insist on receipt of this written notice before sending any money to a caller, no matter how insistent or threatening.
