Galatians 5:17 may provide insight into why people not only go into debt but also why sometimes why bad decisions are made. This passage discusses the conflict between your spiritual self and your flesh. Another interpretation is that your corrupt nature is in conflict with your spiritual nature. I view it as you are in constant battle with peer pressure and what you know is to be the right decision. Let’s face it as adults we face peer pressure as much as children do. There is no automatic shut off valve once you turn 18.Think about your last purchase. Did you make that purchase because you needed it or did you purchase it because your friend had one, the commercial or because the little voice in your head said you deserve to have it without any rhyme or reason? If you answered yes to anything other than you truly needed it then you made the purchase due to peer pressure. The conflict arises because you really wanted the thing but you know logically you cannot afford it.
If you recognize why you are purchasing something you can then begin changing your spending patterns. If you change your spending pattern you just may find that your mountain of debt begins shriking. If your mountain of debt begins shrinking you may find that your stress level is reduced. If your stress level is reduced you may find your relationship and health problems are reduced.
The first step is always the hardest and as it has been said it is the start that stops you. But it can be done and you can resolve the conflict that Galatians 5:17 discusses. You have all the strength you need to make the change. It won’t be easy and it certainly will not be quick, however the rewards will be tremendous.
Remember that knowledge is power and the more knowledge you have about why you make the decision to spend the more power you will have to resolve the conflict of what you want vs. what you need.
