Does The Stress Over Debts or Mortgage Foreclosure Lead to Suicide?

by Peter Orville, Attorney at Law on May 30, 2009 · 1 comment · Posted in Benefits of Bankruptcy, General Bankruptcy Information, Marriage and Debt

Suicide can be a tragic byproduct of the current financial and mortgage foreclosure crisis.  We have all heard of people jumping out of buildings in last century’s Great Depression.  But how many actual suicides or attempts at suicide have occurred because of today’s situation?

At the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys annual convention in Chicago, a speaker asked how many of the over 1000 bankruptcy lawyers attending that session had a potential client who committed suicide because of desperation over their debts.  Over 100 people raised their hands.

Bankruptcy lawyers know the stress that is felt by people who are in debt they don’t feel they can control.  We see how this stress affects their health, their mental health, and their relationships.  We also see how relieved our clients feel after they have found out how bankruptcy can relieve this pressure.

If you are feeling the pressure that comes from being in debt, don’t hesitate to contact an experienced, knowledgeable bankruptcy lawyer to find out what your options are.  In most cases, there is truly light at the end of the tunnel.
