Proof of Social Security Number at Section 341 Meetings

Bankruptcy debtors are required to provide evidence of their social security numbers at the Section 341 meeting of creditors.  Of course, a social security card is a good way to do this.  However, these flimsy cards do not always withstand the ravages of time, so alternatives are often needed.  A good option is to go to a Social Security Administration office before the meeting, request a new card, and obtain a letter stating that you have made the request.  The letter will have your social security number and will be sufficient evidence of it (at least here in Massachusetts).  Other alternatives include W2 forms and annual social security statements–both acceptable by trustees here in Massachusetts.  Tax returns will not work because they are self-prepared and thus not independent proof of the validity of the number.
