As you probably know, there are companies that gather information about the history of your payments on your credit obligation. These are called Credit Bureaus, and they not only gather your information, but they also report this information to anyone who pays for it, including your creditors, potential employers, landlords and insurance companies.
The three credit bureaus you should be aware of are:
Experian, PO Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013. 1-888-Experian www.experian.com
Equifax, Disclosure Department, PO Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374. 1-800-685-1111 www.equifax.com
TransUnion, PO Box 1000, Chester, PA 19022. 1-800-888-4213 www.transunion.com
You are entitled to receive one free copy of your credit report each year, from each of the three credit bureaus. I usually recommend that you get one report every four months, rotating them so you can get your free report from each every 12 months. For example, on January 1, get your Equifax report, on May 1 get your Experian report, and on September 1 get your TransUnion report. Then on January 1, you start over with your Equifax report.
To get your free annual credit report, you can write to Free Annual Credit Report, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281, or call at 1-877-322-8228, or go online to www.annualcreditreport.com.
