…ask me that one question that you think you know the answer to. Sometimes you are right…but too often, you are wrong. You get lots of information from other people who have been through bankruptcy, or who were told something by someone who knew someone who once talked to a person who was told something by a lawyer who used to do bankruptcy work…
There are plenty of places to get information about filing bankruptcy. One of the best resources, of course, is this blogsite, www.bankruptcylawnetwork.com. But even the information you get here, may not apply to your situation. Unless you see an experienced bankruptcy lawyer who can look at your unique situation, you cannot be sure of what is best for you.
What kind of problems have come from the unasked questions? “I was sure it was okay to repay my parents from my tax refund before I filed bankruptcy”; “No, I didn’t list my son’s car in my bankruptcy petition because it was only titled in my name for insurance purposes”; “After I filed bankruptcy I went to H&R Block and got the rapid refund loan they offer, and I spent all of the money”; “I though it was okay to pay off my car loan before I filed”; “I didn’t think I had to list ALL of my creditors”; “I didn’t think my time share was important enough to list”; “Oh yeah, my parents put me on the deed to their property, does that matter?”; And the list goes on.
Be smart. Ask your bankruptcy lawyer lots of questions. Before you sign your bankruptcy petition, your bankruptcy lawyer and his/her office staff should have answered all of your legal and procedural questions. The only stupid question is the question left unasked.
