My clarion call to my bankruptcy clients is, “get me all the information“. More than ever before, the process of filing bankruptcy requires gobs of detail about income and how the debtor spends that income, both before the case is filed and in the future. On those numbers rides the debtor’s ability to file Chapter 7 or the amount of money they have to pay into a Chapter 13 plan.
Yet I cannot tell you how long the filing of cases is prolonged by chasing the client for a couple of vital bits of information. Remember, I didn’t create the official forms nor support the passage of the bankruptcy “reform” act; I’m only your guide through this forest.
Supplying good information is just a part of the client’s involvement in the case. I can file bankruptcy with you, but I can’t do it for you. The client is usually the only one with the facts and papers needed to do the case well. Give me a hand and it will all turn out well!
