Additional Homestead Exemptions in Texas
By Pamela Stewart, Attorney at Law on Oct 31, 2007 in Personal Finance, Tax Issues, Texas
Texas law gives additional homestead exemptions to homeowners 65 years of age or older, if you are a disabled homeowner, or if you are a disabled veteran. Homeowners 65 or older and disabled homeowners may qualify for a $10,000.00 homestead exemption for school taxes in addition to the standard $15,000.00 homestead school tax exemption. Disabled persons must meet the Social Security definition of disabled.
To receive the Disabled Veterans Homestead Exemption, the homeowner must either be a veteran who was disabled while serving in the United States military or the surviving spouse or child (unmarried and under the age of 18) of a disabled veteran or of a member of the armed forces who was killed while on active duty. The amount of the exemption varies by the disability rating from the branch of military service.
In order to receive any of these exemptions, you must apply for it through your county appraisal district.
