By Peter Orville, Attorney at Law on Oct 23, 2007 in General Bankruptcy Information, Your Bankruptcy Attorney & You
The National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, (NACBA) considers itself “the only national organization dedicated to serving the needs of consumer bankruptcy attorneys and protecting the rights of consumer debtors in bankruptcy”. NACBA began in 1992, and has over 2500 members from all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
NACBA has played a critical role in many important court cases affecting the rights of consumer bankruptcy debtors by filing amicus briefs in U.S. Courts of Appeal, the U.S. Supreme Court and since BABCPA, many Bankruptcy Courts and District Courts. NACBA also provides a comprehensive educational program for consumer bankruptcy attorneys with annual convention seminars and other educational programs.
Besides its Board of Directors, NACBA has State Chairs in most states who coordinate statewide legislative activities and who serve as the point persons for local NACBA activities.
NACBA maintains a team of legislative advocates in Washington, DC, and actively represents the voices of consumer debtors and their attorneys in Congress, before the Executive Office of the U.S. Trustees, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules.
NACBA also maintains an Attorney Finder listing on its website for consumers looking for a bankruptcy attorney in their area, and provides links to the member’s website as well as their profile. Additionally, NACBA maintains an extensive document resource center that includes amicus briefs, model briefs, member-posted legal pleadings, and articles and documents that aid members in their practice.
For NACBA members, there is no more valuable resource than the NACBA Listserv, which allows members to pose bankruptcy questions and get real time responses from NACBA members around the country.
NACBA can be contacted at 2300 M Street, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20037, at their administrative email address, admin@nacba.org their legislative directors email address, maureent@nacba.org or through their website www.nacba.org
