Until recently the Northern District of New York had two divisions, one in Albany and one in
Utica. As of earlier this year, a new division was formed in Syracuse. The result was a new lineup for the 32 counties in the Northern District.
The Albany Division, presided over by the Honorable Robert E. Littlefield Jr. includes the counties of Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Green, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Ulster, Warren and Washington.
The Utica Division, presided over by the Honorable Stephen D. Gerling, Chief Judge, includes the counties of Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego and St. Lawrence. Judge Gerling is slated to retire next May, so there will be a new judge in the near future.
The new Syracuse Division is presided over by the newly appointed judge, the Honorable Margaret Cangilos-Ruiz. Judge Ruiz presides over cases filed in the counties of Cayuga, Cortland, Jefferson, Onondaga, Oswego, Tioga and Tompkins.
