The initial consultation is one of the most important moments in the search for bankruptcy counsel. Almost all bankruptcy attorneys offer a free inital office consultation and the decision on who to hire for bankruptcy representation should not be made on this feature alone. But once the decision is made, the consultation is only half the battle. Prior to the consultation, the debtor needs to prepare for the consultation. This means that the debtor really has to ask themselves: What am I looking for in an attorney?
This is a fundamental question because the initial consultation is really an interview where the debtor is making a decision on the person that they want guiding them through the process of bankruptcy. The initial consultation is really where the attorneys earn their stripes. An attorney’s retention rate is a really good indicator of how well the initial consultation goes. Only two things can happen at an initial consultation, the client retains the attorney or the client does not retain the attorney. If the client retains the attorney, then the attorney must continue to massage the relationship and establish the proper protocols for the future of the case and even further than that. If the client does not retain at the initial consultation, then the attorney should have built a very strong repore and trust with a potential client.
The next part in this series will deal with how to maximize your knowledge and understanding of the issues at the initial consultation with your attorney.
