Why Do I Have to Give an Attorney my Name and Social Security Number Before He/She Will See Me?

Recently a potential client had an appointment to see me about filing bankruptcy.  But the debtor refused to give me his name and social security number and to fill out my initial questionaire.  Unfortunately, I had to refuse to see him.  If someone is unwilling to give me basic information to help him/her analysis his/her situation, I can only assume I will not be given all the facts to adequately advice him/her how to proceed in their situation.  I, as an attorney, cannot safely recommend to someone a plan of action, particularly bankruptcy, without a throrough knowledge of the facts.

I am also required to check to see if the client has filed for bankruptcy before.  In order to do this, I must have the person’s name and social security number.

Don’t waste your time or the attorneys time if you are unwilling to be completely forthright with the attorney.
