Credit Cards: Can They Charge An Annual Fee?

Yes, credit card accounts can charge an annual fee if you agreed to pay such a fee as part of the terms and conditions of your Account Agreement.

Now, here is a little gem I picked up looking at the tiny print on the back of a Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature billing statement.  In the upper right hand corner I see “Annual Membership Fee:  Any annual membership fee is billed once a year.  The amount of the fee is shown on the statement when the fee is billed.  If, within 30 days from the mailing or delivery date of the statement with the fee, you contact Customer Service at the address or phone number on this statement to close your account, we will credit your account for the amount of the fee, even if you use your card during that 30 day period.”

That appears to be a straight forward notice.  Why is that remarkable?  Because this is a no-annual-fee credit card.  So if you catch Citibank charging you an annual fee on your no-annual-fee credit card, and if you close your account in time, you will not have to pay that fee, according to Citibank.
