Does this Credit Card Make Me Look Fat?
By Chip Parker, Jacksonville Bankruptcy Attorney on Jul 10, 2007 in Florida, General Bankruptcy Information
According to a recent Bankrate.com article by Tamara E. Holmes, Visa USA conducted a poll in 2002 that concluded that 32% of customers admitted that they avoided the fast food drive-through because they did not have enough cash to pay for what they wanted. Visa not only found that accepting credit increases customer traffic, it also determined that people using credit cards ordered 30% more food than people paying with cash! Quoting a study published in June 2006 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Ms. Holmes reports that the average up-sized fast-food meal added 73 more calories to the meal, cost an extra 67 cents and resulted in an average 36-gram (0.07 pounds) weight gain.
These findings by Visa really are not surprising because it is no secret that consumers spend more money with credit cards than when the purchases are made with cash. It is the same reason casinos use poker chips – The money’s not “real.” Imagine going to the mall with $500 in cash and having to peel eight $20 bills out of you bankroll to pay for those designer jeans. Now imagine just handing the cashier your plastic. Psychologically, isn’t it easier to pay with credit?
This recent article reminds us that the convenience of credit isn’t always a good thing by pointing out that such impulse buying not only hurts your wallet but your waistline as well.
