Will My Boss Know If I File Bankruptcy?
By Douglas Jacobs, California Bankruptcy Attorney on Jun 3, 2007 in General Bankruptcy Information
A petition for bankruptcy is a public document. It is filed in the federal court for the district where you live, and is accessible to anybody interested in looking for it.
That being said, most newspapers and local media don’t bother to publish the names of people that file for bankruptcy, or to publicize a filing in any way. Only if the bankruptcy involves a large corporation or an important business in the local community does one ever see any newspaper or television publicity.
Thus, if your boss routinely checks the bankruptcy filings at the local federal courthouse, or its website, she would be able to find out if you filed. Otherwise, only if someone tells her, you owe her money, the bankruptcy is stopping a wage garnishment, or if you are going to have your Chapter 13 payments made directly out of your paycheck will your boss ever find out.
