I am deaf, can I file for bankruptcy?

The short answer is yes. Under the American with Disabilities Act you are to be provided an interpreter at no cost to you. What this means is that you can hire any attorney you want and the attorney MUST pay for the interpreter to be present at the interview. However the court will pay for the interpreter when you go to court. Either way you should never pay for an interpreter when you visit a physician or visit an attorney.

Do you have to use an interpreter? No, not necessarily. If during the attorney visits you are comfortable with writing or typing then it is not necessary. However, it is necessary for you to have an interpreter during any court proceedings so that you may fully understand what is going on.

When making calls be sure to inform the attorney that they can use AT&T Relay through the Internet to communicate back and forth. Least of all let us not forget text email and the trusty Sidekick. The ADA was enacted to protect your rights, never be shy about standing up for yourself!
