What To Avoid When Hiring A Bankruptcy Lawyer.
By Douglas Jacobs, California Bankruptcy Attorney on Apr 28, 2007 in General Bankruptcy Information
There are many bankruptcy lawyers out there. Who do I pick? Here’s a list of who not to hire:
- Don’t hire the least expensive just because he or she is cheapest. You generally get what you pay for. Filing Bankruptcy isn’t just checking boxes and filling out forms.
- Don’t hire the attorney with the biggest or brightest phone book add, web-site or TV spot. He or she might be a great attorney, but spending money on such advertising doesn’t make him or her good.
- Don’t hire the attorney just because he or she files more bankruptcies than anyone else in the community. That might mean they’re doing a quick and sloppy job.
- Don’t hire an attorney who rushes you in and out of a consultation, and that you develop no rapport with.
- Do hire an attorney you can talk to and you can trust. Bankruptcy can be emotionally difficult. You want someone you can call or e-mail and someone you have confidence in. You need to be able to get a hold of the attorney to ask questions: if he or she is constantly unavailable it will make a difficult process even harder.
- Do hire a certified specialist, member of NACBA, or, even better, a member of the Bankruptcy Law Network – those guys really know what they’re talking about!
