What To Avoid When Hiring A Bankruptcy Lawyer.

There are many bankruptcy lawyers out there.  Who do I pick?  Here’s a list of who not to hire:

  1. Don’t hire the least expensive just because he or she is cheapest.  You generally get what you pay for.  Filing Bankruptcy isn’t just checking boxes and filling out forms.
  2. Don’t hire the attorney with the biggest or brightest phone book add, web-site or TV spot.  He or she might be a great attorney, but spending money on such advertising doesn’t make him or her good.
  3. Don’t hire the attorney just because he or she files more bankruptcies than anyone else in the community.  That might mean they’re doing a quick and sloppy job.
  4. Don’t hire an attorney who rushes you in and out of a consultation, and that you develop no rapport with.
  1. Do hire an attorney you can talk to and you can trust.  Bankruptcy can be emotionally difficult.  You want someone you can call or e-mail and someone you have confidence in.  You need to be able to get a hold of the attorney to ask questions: if he or she is constantly unavailable it will make a difficult process even harder.
  2. Do hire a certified specialist, member of NACBA, or, even better, a member of the Bankruptcy Law Network – those guys really know what they’re talking about!
