How Can I Obtain Copies Of My Closed Bankruptcy Case File?

The National Archives is charged with maintaining records of the United States of America. These records include important historical treasures such as the Charters of Freedom as well as bankruptcy cases filed in the federal court system. The local bankruptcy court does not maintain copies of most files, especially paper files that predate electronic internet filing.

A nationwide network encompasses record centers for specific geographic regions. Illinois is a member of the Great Lakes Region and records can be obtained from the Chicago headquarters.

The following information is required to order a Bankruptcy Case from the regional facility:

- State in which the court is located
- City in which the court is located
- Debtor Name(s)
- Case number
- Transfer number
- Box number
- Location number

The last three items must be obtained from the local bankruptcy court before contacting the regional center. In the Southern District of Illinois, the Court charges a $26 document search fee to provide that information.

Bankruptcy case records are offered in three packaged versions. A pre-selected set costs $10 and includes the Petition, Discharge Order, Summary, and Schedules of Creditors, up to a maximum of 20 pages. The entire case file costs $35 for the first 70 pages. A docket sheet listing all documents on file in the case costs $10 for the first 20 pages. Additional pages are available for $0.50 each. Orders under 25 pages can be faxed, while FedEx delivery adds an additional $25. The records center will certify each of the previous sets for an extra $6. You may use this order form to get started.
