The next step is attending the initial consultation.  Some attorneys offer a free initial consultation and some charge a fee for the consultation.  If an attorney comes highly recommended, do not let the consultation fee be a factor in your decision making process.  Although there are many reasons why an attorney may or may not charge a consultation fee, your decision to hire the attorney should not be determined on this one issue alone.  You want to meet the attorney that will be handling your case, and you want to discuss the issues that are important to you.  Remember, you are interviewing the attorney to decide whether or not you want to retain their services.

At this consultation, you should be greeted warmly.  You should expect your consultation to begin on time or in a timely manner.  Make a mental note of your first impression of the attorney.  Did the attorney devote the time necessary to your specific situation?  Did the attorney encourage you to ask questions?  Did the attorney answer your questions to your satisfaction?  Did the attorney make you feel comfortable?  Did the attorney speak to you respectfully?  What was your gut impression?  Is this the person that you want to handle your case?  If so, then you may want to retain the attorney and get started right away.  If not, you still have the ability to leave and seek the services of another attorney.  This article is by no means an exhaustive list, and you are encouraged to seek the opinion of as many attorneys as you feel necessary prior to making your decision.  Your relationship with your attorney is a crucial step in the beginning, middle and end of your case.  Good Luck
