Hiring a Bankruptcy Attorney in Florida! Part I

There are many issues to consider when thinking about bankruptcy.  The most important could be your choice of attorney.  Although you can file bankruptcy without an attorney, this is probably not the best course of action.  Additionally, the yellow pages may leave you confused because the Florida Bar places many restrictions on attorney advertising.  All the ads in the phone book seem to run together and often look the same.  So, the question remains: How do you find an attorney that you will feel comfortable with at this time in your life.  Because this topic is quite involved and important, it will be handled in two parts.

First, you want to be sure that your attorney can handle the case.  The American Board of Certification is the only body that the Florida Bar recognizes as authoritative enough to certify consumer bankruptcy attorneys.  Board Certified Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys are specialist in their field and have been recognized for their accomplishments in the area of bankruptcy law.  Second, you want to discuss your financial situation with friends, relatives or other people you trust.  Don’t be afraid to ask if they can refer you to an attorney, or if they know someone who can refer you to a qualified attorney.

Third, you want to do a little research on the attorney.  For example, go to the firm’s website and look around for a little while, and then, call the firm and see how they answer the phone, were they nice to you, did they offer free information at no obligation, were they willing to offer you a convenient appointment, did they create a warm and inviting atmosphere on the phone.  Ask your self, do you feel comfortable so far?  Part II of this article will be published shortly.
