Free Credit Reports!!!

How many times have you seen this offer?

Most places offering a free credit report are really trying to sell you something else. Even the three major credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and Trans Union, will try to sell you products when you are getting your free credit report.

Almost everyone knows, or has heard, that you can get a free credit report, but there is a lot of misinformation about how to obtain one. Under Federal Law, everyone is entitled to get a free credit report from each of the three agencies once a year. Online, you can access them from www.annualcreditreport.com. You can call or mail for the report instead of doing it online. See: Free Annual Credit Reports. Some experts sugest that you do it that way in order to preserve certain rights.

Here’s a clever angle on the free credit report: Since the reports are pretty much the same, don’t get all three at once. If you get choose only one agency today, you can go back in four months and choose the next agency and then in another four months go back and choose the last one. Four months later you can start the process over again. This effectively gets you one free credit report every four months. You’ll never pay for another report again.
