Costs of Credit Counseling in a Bankruptcy Case
By Eugene S. Melchionne, Connecticut Bankruptcy Attorney on Feb 3, 2007 in Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, Connecticut, General Bankruptcy Information
You initial credit counseling course must be taken prior to filing a bankruptcy case. The certificate is only good for six months from the date of the course. This means that you must use it to file bankruptcy at any time within that six months.
The second course is called “Debtor Education” and it should be completed within 45 days AFTER your meeting with the U.S. Trustee. After this session, you will receive a certificate much like the first one. This certificate can be seen as your ‘ticket’ out of bankruptcy.
The cost varies from provider to provider, but you can expect to spend about $50.00 for the Credit Counseling. The Debtor Education course costs less and typically runs from $20.00 to $50.00, depending on whether you have a single or joint case.
