The Court assigns a date for a meeting of creditors after a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition is filed. This date is usually about 30 days after the case if filed. Creditors then have 60 days from this date — the first date set for the
meeting of creditors — to object to the discharge or dischargeability of certain debts. See FRBP 4004. After this deadline passes and there have been no objections — which is usually the case — the Court issues its order discharging the consumer’s debts. Here in Massachusetts this usually takes place a couple of weeks after the deadline for objections has passed. So from start to finish a normal, consumer Chapter 7 bankruptcy case usually takes between three and four months.
